Ellary Estate Holiday Cottages

Tell us a bit about yourself; what made you start providing accommodation? What was it that made you choose your property in the very beginning?
Ellary has been providing holiday accommodation for a number of years, and is a well-established family business.

What do you think are the main reasons your guests choose your accommodation?
Most guests that come to Ellary will come back – some every year (some for 30+ years!), and some every few years. We often have people say that there is nowehere quite like it – the peace and tranquillity, combined with the fantastic views and proximity to the loch make it hard to beat. The fact that we welcome guests to walk anywhere on the estate is also a major plus – and 4 legged friends are always welcome.

What do you think are the main reasons why visitors come to your area?
The West Coast of Scotland is well known for its spectacular sunsets and rugged coastline. We are in central Argyll, which means we’re within easy distance of Oban (north of us), and ferries to the islands (south of us), and also only a couple of hours from Glasgow.

Has your accommodation received any awards, or especially suited to certain visitors?
We are well suited to couples or families (we don’t accept hen/stag dos etc), in particular those who enjoy being outdoors as there are so many walks right on the doorstep of all our cottages. We are right on the loch, which makes it ideal for those with kayaks or boats (we have a private harbour, which guests are welcome to use if they are bringing boats).

What do you think makes your accommodation stand out from the crowd?
Our private location right on the loch is something that most places don’t have. The fact that we have 13 properties in total on the estate also makes it good for multiple-family groups. And the wildlife – we have multiple families of otters living on the estate, so between them, the red squirrels, deer, seals and birds of prey there’s plenty to see!

Is your accommodation dog friendly? If yes, tell us what dog friendly venues are to be found locally; eg doggy friendly pubs, beaches, walks etc.
Yes, dogs are welcome in all of our properties – the first stays for free, and the second is charged at £10 per week. There are loads of walks right at your front door, and there are various dog-friendly cafes/restaurants in nearby Tarbert.

Where do you like to eat or drink (close to your accommodation)? What do you recommend on the menu?!
We have a restaurant over at Castle Sween Holiday Park (on the other side of the estate) – they serve good food, and the drive over can be quite spectacular! There is a private hill road which we give guests access to, which takes you the 8 miles across the peninsula. Go for dinner, visit the castle and catch the amazing sunsets you get from there!

What’s your favourite place to go in your area that you think people should try and visit?
Skipness Castle is a favourite with many of our guests – there is a beach, the ‘Seafood Cabin’, and Coco – the friendly (free roaming). Inverary is also worth a visit if it’s a wet day – there is the Jail, Castle, Auchendrain Museum, and various cafes etc.

Do you have any advice you want to give to people coming to stay in your area?

“If you love relaxing in a tranquil quiet location then this is the destination for you. Couldn’t fault the whole experience and the owners couldn’t have been more pleasant and helpful. Days fishing and walking followed by BBQ’s…. perfect”
